Over 2.5 million people in the UK have been on Alpha. It is a course which is designed particularly for people who wouldn’t normally go to church, but is open to anyone who wants to explore some of life’s biggest questions, such as whether God is real, why suffering exists, and what life is really all about.
Shardarne Meghie attended our last course, and here he shares a little about his experience:
What do you do in London?
I currently work in a digital media agency and have done so for almost 2 years
What was your view of Christianity before doing the Alpha Course?
I knew about Christianity, but I didn’t know what it took to have relationship with God. My naïve understanding was that Christianity was something that focused on a set of rules which we all had to abide by in order in order to go to heaven.
How did you come to do the Alpha Course?
My friends had mentioned to me about doing the Alpha Course. I also saw the Alpha advertisements around London and grew compelled to find out more about the course.
What did you make of the course?
I found the course very eye opening and completely life changing. The structure of Alpha is a great environment to be challenged and ask any burning questions. I now have a better understanding of what it takes to have a relationship with God and I look forward to the journey ahead.
What was your favourite thing about the course?
I’m afraid I can’t just choose one thing! One of my favourite things about the course would have to be getting to know people from all different walks of life. I find it so interesting to hear people’s stories of why they have chosen to come to Alpha and what they generally think about Christianity. Hearing other people’s journeys really helped me to gain a better idea of what it takes to be a Christian.
Secondly I really enjoyed the Alpha weekend away in the countryside as it was a chance to get to know everybody on the course, but without the surroundings of London.
What difference has Alpha made in your life?
Alpha has changed my perception about the whole world and generally how I choose to live my life.
Why would you suggest that people bring their friends to Alpha?
There is absolutely nothing to lose by attending the 8-week Alpha course and so much to gain. I can guarantee that by attending this course you will walk away having learnt something that you didn’t already know.
Our new course begins with two launch nights at the Grange Holborn Hotel. On January 26, award-winning comedian Andy Kind will perform a comedy set and discuss how faith makes a difference to his life and work, and on January 27, Theoretical Physicist Dr Ard Louis will address the question ‘Has science made God obsolete?’
Both evenings include a free two-course meal and a short introduction to the course. To find out more about Alpha and to book a place on our launch evenings, click here.
