My Experience of Alpha

Over 2.5 million people in the UK have been on Alpha. It is a course which is designed particularly for people who wouldn’t normally go to church, but is open to anyone who wants to explore some of life’s biggest questions, such as whether God is real, why suffering exists, and what life is really all about.

Oriana recently attended a course, and here she shares a little about her experience:

_____

What do you do in London?

I am a primary school teacher, living in South West London.

How did you come to do the Alpha Course?

I was brought up as a Christian but had not been going to church since my teenage years. A friend had invited me to ChristChurch London and I had visited for two consecutive Christmas Carol Services. The services were engaging and very different from how I remembered church. Also they were full of nice people and the atmosphere was great.

At the Carol Services they advertised the Alpha Course, and on the second year I felt that I wanted to explore my faith further, so I signed up.

What did you make of the course?

There were lovely people, good food and interesting conversations. The sessions started with an introduction to a different part of Christianity and the discussions that followed were open-minded and people were able to share their different beliefs.

There was also a day away later on in the course, where we looked at the subject of the Holy Spirit, and this was one of my favourite parts of the whole experience.

What difference has Alpha made in your life? And would you recommend it to others?

Since attending Alpha I have now started going to church regularly and have reconnected with my faith. I’ve also met some lovely people and have made many new friends. I would definitely recommend it to others, as it is a really friendly way to explore faith, with no pressure.

Our new course begins with two launch nights at the Grange Holborn Hotel. On September 28, Professor Tom McLeish will consider whether science has replaced God, and on September 29, Emma Jones will talk about her experience as an entertainment correspondent for the BBC and how faith has made a difference to her life and work.

Both evenings include a free two-course meal and a short introduction to the course. To find out more about Alpha and to book a place on our launch evenings, click here.
